As I recover from a food hangover from Thanksgiving (one of my fave American holidays) I sit and ponder life and its highways and the twists, turns and connections that bring amazing surprises to your world. Vanessa & Shane fall into this category. As a wedding photographer each of your weddings becomes part of your “wedding family” and some drift off into the future and paths never cross again. Others come dancing back into your world and the family expands to let in another couple and their amazing story. Aaron and Renae were one of our early couples and were one of the funnest weddings and couples that we’d ever photographed. The day had it all, even a magician!
Roll forward many years and we receive an email from Vanessa who had been at that wedding and wanted us to photograph her and Shane’s wedding. One of the things that we take pride in is having impressed the guests enough that they remember us and want us to be a part of their wedding day, it truly humbles us! As excited as that was when she told us more about the day I almost got giddy. Picture it: back yard, an old rusty truck, live acoustic music and dancing under the stars! Utter perfection.
Shane and Vanessa are easy going, quick to laugh, giving and compassionate… so genuine that you feel like you’ve known them forever. It is no wonder ALL of their guests were laughing, hugging and celebrating with them… the wedding was simply an extension of who they are as people. It is one of my favourite weddings we’ve ever photographed. I adored the intimacy of the occasion and being able to tell their story. As I try to express what it means to me to capture these images for them it occurs to me that Vanessa actually did it for me and I hope she doesn’t mind me sharing this text: “Thank you soo much for making our dreams come true… Out of this world and memories that we will always cherish, as well as our girls.”
Each wedding I try to express what it is that Marty and I try to do with our photography without sounding trite or cliché. It’s not just a business. It’s not just photographs. And while it’s not saving lives or changing the world we do hope that it makes a difference to our couples and they have something special that they can reflect upon, share with their closest family and friends, turn to when they want to smile and ultimately hand down to their children.
These are our stories and as we increasingly “chat” through bits and bytes I feel they are becoming more important. We don’t write letters anymore. We don’t have living rooms littered with photo albums. We don’t gather our loved ones around for the slideshow of our holidays. But one of the wonderful things about wedding photography is that it is enduring as the storyteller. Weddings like this one remind me of how much I adore those stories. I loved that their girls made the moments random and in doing so adorned the story even more. I loved that the venue was their home and each time they look out to the back yard they will remember the wedding, the laughter and the joy that everyone experienced.
And for Marty and I, we just couldn’t be happier that we have become part of those memories. These are the days to remember… and the stories to be told!
I hope you enjoy guys and welcome to Our Family!
